Flash Your DS Lite To Save Battery LIfe
August 1st, 2006
So after about a week of playing with my Nintendo DS Lite and G6 Lite, the one thing i’ve noticed is the battery life. Its draining my NDS big time. All the reviews report that the G6 uses barely any power at all, so all signs point to the Passcard3 passme device.
The Passcard3 is placed in your DS game slot to allow you to execute NDS specific code. Without it, you can only run GBA games off of your flashcart. The problem is, it seems to be sucking the life out of my NDS.
So I decided to flash the firmware on my NDS with a modified firmware. Flashing the firmware essentially removes the need for the Passcard3. You are able to launch anything on your flashcart. The problem is, without anything in the NDS game slot, the NDS can’t sleep. It gets stuck in a weird loop. So to solve that, just keep a retail game or a dummy cart in that slot. Its better to plug the hole anyways, so its not open for dirt and dust.
Flashing the firmware is very simple. You just load an application called FlashMe, bridge 2 solder points, and you’re done. It takes all of 45 seconds to do the whole process. Afterwards, there is no need for the Passcard3. Instructions on how to do it are here.
So. What happened? I’ll tell ya. When using the G6 Lite and Passcard3 devices to launch games, I couldn’t let the NDS sleep over night without its battery being completely drained by morning. With my stock NDS Lite I was getting DAYs of playtime with one charge. I’d let it sleep and it was fine in the morning. After flashing, I now am back to normal battery life. The passcard3 was just sucking the LIFE out of my battery. I charged it up last night, played about 30-40 minutes, paused the game, closed it to put it to sleep, and let it sit all night. By morning, it still had a full battery icon in the NDS menu. Woo Hoo!! No more daily charging for me!
