Happy New Year from MacUpdate. They’re offering free memberships for the whole year if you sign up in January. Pretty nice deal. This is great for customizing your columns on searches. Its nice to see the user rating column when choosing an application to try for the task you searched for. Its also nice to sort by date to see which app was updated most recently. Currently supported apps are going to be your best bet over something that hasn’t been updated since March of last year.
Posts are short right now from the big move. If you care, I might post some “after” shots of the house, once we get rid of Box Land.

The move is going well I hope. Are you running cat5 thru the whole house or are you all wireless? Just curious how your xbox connects mostly, since I just ran a 100ft under the house for the living room xbox to see the network.
Slightly off topic but thought I would share some xbox stuff with ya. I am the developer of Mimesis (a content distribution app on the xbox projectmimesis.com). I don’t know what games you play but we have homebrew content available for download for a few games so far. The app runs on your xbox and installs content downloaded from the servers as DLC (just like LIVE! installs downloadable content), so its playable from the disc. :) FYI

Well I got under the house for the first time yesterday, in the poaring rain no less. I had to run my coax for my cable modem up into the wall into a jack. The cable guy wanted to drill strait through my precious brick, heh. So he just cut me a line long enough to run.
I bought one of those plates that lets you plug different things into it, coax, cat5, speaker wire, rca plugs, anything you want to mix and match. I got a 6 port one so i’d have plenty of room to grow. I plugged it up with a coax and 3 ethernets and 2 blank spacers.
My cable is coming into the coax port to which i plug my cable modem to. My modem goes to my wireless router, which then goes strait to a 16 port Linksys 10/100 switch. My iMac and media server then both plug into the switch.
Next weekend i’ll then plug 2 more cables from the switch to the wall plate. I’ll then wire cat5 directly to the ethernet ports on back of the plate and run cat5 from the plate to my living room and bedroom.
The bedroom and livring room will each have the same type of plate but will only have 2 ports, a cat5 and coax port. i’ll plug a switch into the living room port and plug my xbox and tivo into that switch. And i’ll plug my xbox directly into the ethernet port in my bedroom.
So esentially i have wall plates all around my house wired directly to another wall plate to which i have cat5 directly connected to them with short wires to my 10/100 switch. Its a pretty nice setup for home use. And I have room to grow if i want to run ethernet out to say, my shed, heheh.
On the other note, no i’ve never seen that software. i dont know how i missed it in all my xbox hacking. I’m not much of a gamer these days though. I just use my xboxen for media centers.

Nice setup. I have a couple of those wall jacks but with only two ports though. (coax and cat5)
I dont play many games on my xbox either anymore. It gets a lot of its use over the past few months in programming Mimesis (we were featured on G4) but the #1 use is for my xbox is the same, as a media front end for the server. I have converted so many friends who wanted to buy WMCE. The price point for a softmodded xbox with XBMC on the frontend and some old existing PII in the backend holding all your files is much less. Unless you crack the xbox open to put in a larger drive, even then its less.
