iTunes To Add Podcasting Support
As noted here, Apple is planning on adding podcasting support to iTunes 4.9. This is something I suggested months ago, and I’m glad that they are finally doing it. It just makes sense.
The scary part is the position it puts Apple in. Pretty much everyone already uses iTunes for storing their podcasts. They may use a different iPodder client, but iTunes is usually in the mix. Now with RSS support inside of iTunes, Apple has TONS of control here. This is scary.
What isn’t scary is knowing that before his announcement, Steve Jobs met with Adam and Ron to discuss podcasting. Steve “wanted to make sure they were doing things the right way” Adam explained in his May 24th Daily Source Code. This is amazing news. Apple definitely had the opportunity to pull podcasting into a different direction, and instead of doing that, they’ve decided to help the podcasting community pull it in the same direction. This is a huge deal now. Apple has just become a 400 lb. gorilla in the podosphere. Lets just hope they’re responsible and respectful of the community while doing it.
