Look Out! PodCasts are here!
Its a rare moment when you find yourself witnessing a new medium. One might call the Internet a medium, when in fact its really a source of distribution. On it you'll find tons of different mediums. I still remember the time I came across my first weblog and realized it wasn't just a website but rather one piece of an entire new medium. One that has spread like virii. Weblogs have simply blown up. Everyone and their mother has a blog, including both presidential nominees. The importance of weblogs and basic point really come down to one thing: voice. Weblogs give people a voice to whatever audience they want to talk to. It takes practically nothing to start one, and even less to maintain it. And in most cases its free. Never in my time has it been this easy to have a voice so big. Gone are the times of the media and corporations controlling so much voice. Its a wonderful thing.
This brings me to my point, I DO have one from time to time. PodCasts. Engadget ran a story today about an extremely young idea that is spreading across the internet. It involves blogging, RSS, and digital audio. And if you have an iPod taking advantage of its auto sync, then its even better. Visit the Engadget post to learn more, I probably wouldn't do it justice. But what I see here is that were on the verge of a totally new medium. With your average joe able to record himself and to distribute it via RSS automatically to his listeners, who needs TV schedules or radio drive time? Big Media, be scared. The public has yet another voice. And its getting louder and louder.
