Listen, Track, Learn
I just downloaded a new plugin for iTunes tonight. It came from AudioScrobbler.com. The site itself actually provides a service of tracking your songs for you. You install the plugin and listen to your music. It tracks what you are listening to on its servers and suggests other artists you might be interested in. You can also contact other users that might be into the same genres or artists. While I'm not into having everything I listen to tracked, I'm going to try it out and see if I can get anything out of the service.
Everything is free from the service to the plugin. They offer a plugin to almost every player out there including iTunes, XMMS, and winAmp. They even offer a plugin for the SlimP3 player that sits in your living room with the rest of your components.
The iTunes plugin is pretty nice. It doesn't actually “Plug In” to iTunes, it is actually a menu bar app that uses AppleScript to see what you are playing in iTunes. It uses up nominal cpu time and is pretty stable. They say they will add the ability to upload the list to another place soon. This will allow me to use this rather than Kung-Tunes to update my “Recently Played” list. So I'll be able to kill two birds with one stone, and Kung-Tunes was never really that stable if you ask me. Not to mention it was a whole other app that i had to launch, where this is a menu item that is out of my way.
Head over AudioScrobbler.com and check it out. There are a lot of users so far, and it could end up being a neat little project.
