RIP Cdnow.com
I liked Cdnow.com. In fact it was in my top 10 list of most useful sites. It wasn't just a music store, it was a great database. I used Cdnow.com for more than buying music, I used it to reference albums and artists. It had a great interface to it. When you clicked on an artist it had a great list of all known albums for that particular artist. It separated Imports and true releases, showed the year of release, and had a suggested genre. It even featured the album art.
Well maybe I'm behind the times, but I just went to Cdnow.com and was a bit confused, if not disoriented. The first thing I noticed when I got there was that their search field had changed a bit. I thought it was odd, but I searched on. I got to the search results page and was bowled over. Everything was different. The familiar, friendly, intuitive results were gone. All that was left was popular music and a list of some albums, not all of them. The terrible search results were very familiar, as were the tabs at the top of the page used for SUPER navigation as I like to call it. My eyes drifted to the address bar to show me what I was already hoping wasn the truth. www.amazon.com/blah/blah?blah=blah They've been bought by Amazon.com.
I not sure how this got by me. As many of my friends would tell you, I read a lot of news and keep up with this particular stuff. The worst part about this is that AS I was going there this evening I was thinking to myself, I so glad that cdnow.com is still around, it sure is a great site. And what do I see? The only monopoly that doesn make money had gobbled up my favorite music site.
I not sure what I going to be using for reference now. But I know it won be Amazon.com. What do you guys use? What are some good resources for ALL kinds of genres. Because the last thing Id call Amazon.com is a resource.
Man, you are SO right about CDNow issue.
I used to use it just like you did, now
there seems to be no good equivalent to
the versatility of the OLD CDNow search
engine/database.
I’ve just recently been kicking around
my setlists, and thought it might be
interesting to see a chronological
breakdown of the songs I play. Nothing
fancy, just the year first released.
I hopped on the web, thought that would
be a relatively simple thing. What WAS
I thinking. Gracenote/CDDB seems to be
about the most “complete” listing, but
still not very convenient, as they only
have album dates, so I’d have to go
through each album with a certain track
to figure out which is the earliest of
a song.
Especially since I do a lot of “southern
rock”, etc. lots of stuff that’s been
on several compilations and “best of”,
sometimes odd, trying to find the first
appearance of song.
Any help out there on the web for some-
thing like this? A cross-referenced
discography that’s NOT limited to a
specific genre ?
Thanks!
Mike

One of the more useful music pages I know is http://www.allmusic.com.
I used AllMusic when I worked at a local record store a few years ago. Really great for finding a customer’s obscure request!
